Desert City Jazz performing at Tempe Center for the Arts in June, 2016

Desert City Jazz may have need for subs or replacement musicians at any time throughout the year, so please let us know of your interest today.

We play fun, challenging contemporary charts (Gordon Goodwin, Maynard Ferguson, Rob McConnell, etc.) plus some classic big band music (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Sammy Nestico, etc.) so you should be a good reader.

Desert City Jazz consists of five saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, 1 baritone), four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums, and (optionally) guitar, auxiliary percussion, and vocalists. For saxophonists, the ability to double on flute and/or clarinet is helpful but not required.

The ability to improvise (or the willingness to learn) is a plus, but not required. If you wish to perform improvised solos, you will get them.

In order to pay our director and buy music, musicians pay a membership fee of $80 per half year. Your first half-year is free! Musicians who are also members of Desert Overture wind symphony don’t need to pay twice. Musicians do not receive pay.

The band rehearses on Monday evenings throughout the year at a location just north of downtown Phoenix.
