Desert City Jazz performing at Tempe Center for the Arts in June, 2016

Desert City Jazz may have need for subs or replacement musicians at any time throughout the year, so please let us know of your interest today.

Desert City Jazz currently has openings for a trombonist, trumpeter, and pianist.

We play fun, challenging contemporary charts (Gordon Goodwin, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Kubis, etc.) plus some classic big band music (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, etc.) so you should be a good reader.

For the trombone and trumpet chairs, the ability to improvise is not required, but if you want solos, you’ll get them.

For the piano, some improvisational skill is required along with the ability to read chord changes and “comp.”

Desert City Jazz consists of five saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, 1 baritone), four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums, and (optionally) guitar, auxiliary percussion, and vocalists. For saxophonists, the ability to double on flute and/or clarinet is helpful but not required.

In order to pay our director and buy music, members pay a membership fee of $80 per half year. Your first half-year is free! Musicians who are also members of Desert Overture wind symphony don’t need to pay twice. Members do not receive pay.

The band rehearses on Monday evenings throughout the year at a location just north of downtown Phoenix.
