Vehicle

Here’s one more video from our “Drop the Needle II” concert in April.

Chris Thompson, one of our trombonists, is also a dynamic lead vocalist. We featured Chris singing the Ides of March’s 1970 hit “Vehicle.” Composer Jim Peterik was inspired to write this song by a girl named Karen he had a crush on. He had a car and she would ask him to drive her here and there, but she didn’t seem interested in him for anything beyond a free ride. “I’m just her vehicle,” he thought – and a hit song was born. His persistence paid off, though; they later married.

Our arrangement also features guitarist Al Duarte recreating the iconic solo from the original hit. Enjoy!

Rock with You

From our “Drop the Needle II” concert, here’s “Rock with You” by Michael Jackson. It was released in 1979 as the second single from his album Off the Wall. It reached #1 on both the Pop and R&B charts, as did many of Michael Jackson’s songs from that era. Fun fact: This song was originally offered to Karen Carpenter, but she turned it down.

Our arrangement by Roger Holmes features Andy Rich on trumpet and Nolan Morse on tenor sax. Enjoy!

Superstition

Here’s “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder from his 1972 album, Talking Book. “Superstition” reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1973. The song earned Wonder two Grammys: “Best Rhythm & Blues Song” and “Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male.” Our arrangement by Mike Tomaro features Andy Rich on trumpet and Mike Wojciechowicz on alto sax. Enjoy!

So Very Hard to Go

From our “Drop the Needle II” concert, here’s “So Very Hard to Go” by Tower of Power from their 1973 album “Tower of Power.” This was their highest-charting song, peaking at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #11 on Billboard’s R&B singles. Our arrangement by Roger Holmes features Andy Rich on trumpet. Enjoy!

Human Nature

Here’s “Human Nature,” the fifth single from Michael Jackson’s blockbuster album Thriller. Fun trivia: composer Steve Porcaro originally wrote this song for his band, Toto, at the same time they were recording “Africa.” Toto chose not to use it, but it was submitted as a demo to Quincy Jones (Thriller producer) and he liked it. This arrangement by Mike Tomaro features Ray Botte on tenor sax. Enjoy!
